Day 13 (New Year's Day) - from Christchurch to Wanaka

Spectacular mountain scenery but most difficult lighting conditions at the shore of Lake Tekapo

The New Year started off with rapid changes in scenery as we drove along the Inland Scenic Route across the wide Rakaia River Valley and into the mountains where we passed Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki, two amazingly blue glacier lakes.

Our route passed the airfield at Omarama, New Zealand’s premier glider port and soaring destination, and continued on through arid landscapes to the resort town of Wanaka before ending nearby at the historic Cardrona hotel, our final destination for the day.

New Zealand's West Coast is extremely wet, but on the east side of the range, the land is very dry
